If you have a Boston Job to fill, how do you craft a job posting that encourages only people with relevant work experience to apply? Many companies use Web sites such as Monster, Career Builder and Indeed to advertise opportunities. But because Boston Job seekers with a broad range of backgrounds frequent these sites, companies oftentimes receive many resumes from candidates for their Boston Job Opportunities whose skills do not match the requirements of the available position. If you want to reduce the number of ill-matched resumes you receive, you need to make sure that your job posting is targeting people who you think would be a good fit for your company.
Consider the following when you create your next job advertisement:
1. Attention, Interest, Desire, Action (or AIDA). Copywriters use this format all the time when creating promotional campaigns. You too should follow this format to grab the attention of job seekers whose skills and career interests match your opportunity. If you write a targeted headline, you’ll pull in appropriate job candidates who will read through your Boston Job description and requirements. If they like what they read, they will then take action and apply to your company.
2. Be brief, concise and straightforward. Describe your company in two or three sentences. What does your company do? What makes your company unique? Next, list the job responsibilities. Tell job seekers exactly what they would be doing if hired. Then, list the requirements you expect applicants to meet. Does a candidate need a certain college degree? Administrative or analytical skills? Wrap up your job posting by listing the perks your company offers employees.
3. Simplicity is key. Write clearly. Use simple sentence structure and punctuation. If you’d like, include a relevant image or two. Also, be sure to include an easy to locate “apply for this position” button or an e-mail address to which applicants can submit their resume and cover letter.
Here’s a checklist of things you should include in your job posting:
- Job title
- Brief description of your company and the team with which the person would work
- Job location
- Job responsibilities
- Required credentials
- Description of life at your company and employee benefits
- Application instructions
- Call to action (i.e. “Apply for this position”)
- Contact information (e-mail address, phone number, etc.)
